What is this?
A Swiss tournament pairs players against opponents on a similar score, round after round, and nobody is knocked out. This tool does the first round of that for you: it takes your list of players, shuffles it, hands out a bye if the number is odd, and lays out the boards with a colour for each player.
It uses the same round 1 logic as the ChessHost app, including the recommended number of rounds for your field size. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Type or paste your players, one name per line. Blank lines are ignored.
- Press Generate pairings. Round 1 boards appear with White and Black on each.
- If you have an odd number, the player with the bye is shown at the bottom. They sit out and normally get a full point.
- Play the round, then write the results down. For round 2 onward you need to know who beat whom, so let the app take over from there.
Why round 1 is random
In round 1 nobody has a score yet, so there is nothing to sort on. If the tool ordered players any other way it would end up alphabetical, and the same roster would produce the same boards and the same unlucky person on the bye at every single event. Shuffling is the fair answer.
From round 2 on it is the opposite: real scores exist, so players on the same score should meet, colours need balancing, and two people who have already played must not be paired again. Common questions
How do I generate Swiss pairings?
Put one player name per line and press Generate pairings. The tool shuffles the field, gives the bye to the last player if the number is odd, and pairs the rest into boards with a colour each. Round 1 is random by design: nobody has a score yet, so any other order would just be alphabetical.
Why is round 1 random?
Because there is nothing to sort on. In round 1 every player is on zero points, so a sorted list would fall through to names and the same roster would produce the same boards and the same bye every single event. Shuffling keeps it fair. From round 2 on, real scores exist and pairings follow the standings.
What happens with an odd number of players?
One player sits out with a bye and is normally awarded a full point. This tool gives the bye to the last player after the shuffle, which is random for round 1. Across a full event the bye should rotate so nobody sits out twice before everyone has sat out once.
Can this generate round 2 and later?
No, this tool does round 1 only. Later rounds need the results of the earlier ones: who is on what score, who has already played whom, and who has had which colour. That is bookkeeping a static page cannot do, so run the event in ChessHost and every round after the first is generated for you.
How many rounds should the tournament have?
The tool shows the recommendation next to your pairings, using the same rule as the app: 3 rounds up to 7 players, 4 up to 15, 5 up to 23, 6 up to 31, and 7 for 32 or more. Enough to separate a clear winner without the day dragging on.
Is this Swiss pairing generator free?
