How it works

A Swiss tournament does not pair everyone against everyone. Instead, each round pairs players on similar scores, so good players keep meeting other good players. You only need enough rounds for one clear winner to rise to the top, not so many that the day drags on.

The rule of thumb is to keep roughly halving the field. Eight players need enough rounds to find one winner, sixteen need one more, and so on. These are the round counts ChessHost recommends automatically when you create a tournament:

Common questions

How many rounds for 8 players?

4 rounds. That is enough to give a clear winner without taking all day.

How many rounds for 16 players?

5 rounds. As the field grows you add a round so the top players still get separated.

Can I run more or fewer rounds than recommended?

Yes. These are sensible defaults for a fun, fair event. You can always run extra rounds if you have time, or fewer for a quick casual session.

What if I have an odd number of players?

No problem. In a Swiss tournament one player sits out each round with a bye and usually scores a point. ChessHost handles byes for you automatically.
