How Long Will My Chess Tournament Take?
Enter your players and time per game to estimate the number of rounds and the total time your tournament will run. Built for casual, in-person events.
This is a rough guide. Real games often finish early, so most events run a little shorter.
How the estimate works
In a casual tournament, all games in a round are played at the same time on different boards, so adding more players does not make a round longer. It changes how many rounds you need. We work out the rounds from your player count and format the same way the ChessHost app does, then add a few minutes per round to pair players and reset the boards.
In short: total time is the number of rounds multiplied by the time each round takes, where a round is your chosen time per game plus a short changeover. Want a shorter event? Pick a faster time per game, that is the biggest lever.
Common questions
How long does a chess tournament take?
It depends on rounds and time per game. A casual 16-player Swiss event at 10 minutes per game is about 5 rounds and roughly 1 and a half to 2 hours including breaks.
How can I make it shorter?
Use a faster time per game, like 5 minutes, or run fewer rounds. A quicker time control is the easiest way to fit a whole event into one evening.
Does adding players make it longer?
Not much. Games run in parallel, so more players mostly means a round or two more, not longer rounds. Going from 8 to 16 players adds about one round.
