Which pairing format should you use?

Swiss is the right choice for most events. Every player plays every round, winners face winners, and a clear champion emerges in far fewer rounds than a full league. It works from 4 players to 400. Round Robin is best for small groups of up to about 10 players where everyone should play everyone, like a club box league or an office ladder. Knockout gives you a dramatic bracket where the loser of each game is out, perfect for quick blitz nights and finals days.

What Swiss pairing software has to get right

Swiss is the format almost every club, school and pub event uses, and it is also the one that goes wrong fastest by hand. Four things have to be right in every round, and the software should handle all four without being asked:

• Score groups. Players on the same score play each other, so the leaders meet the leaders and a clear winner appears in a handful of rounds instead of a full league.
• Colour balance. Nobody should get white four times running. The engine tracks each player's colour history and evens it out as it pairs.
• No rematches. Two players who have already met are not paired again, which is exactly the rule that breaks first in a spreadsheet around round three.
• Byes for odd numbers. With an odd field somebody sits out each round. The bye goes to a different player each time, they are awarded the point automatically, and nobody has to remember whose turn it was.

Tiebreaks are the other half.
