What is this?
A knockout bracket, also called single elimination, is the format where you lose once and you are out. Winners move across the bracket round by round until two players meet in the final. It is the quickest way to find a champion and the most exciting to watch, which is why cup events, school finals and pub nights love it.
The awkward part is a field that is not 8, 16 or 32 players. This generator builds the bracket at the next size up and hands out byes, free passes into round 2, so the numbers work. Pick a seeded draw and the byes go to your strongest players, the usual rule; pick a random draw and luck decides. How to use it
- Type or paste your players, one name per line. For a seeded bracket, put the strongest player first.
- Choose Random draw or Seeded, strongest first, then tap Generate bracket.
- After each game, tap the winner. They move into the next round, and the loser is crossed out.
- Tapped the wrong player? Tap the other one. Anything the change affects later in the bracket is cleared for you.
- Tap Print bracket to put it on the wall, or keep it open on a laptop.
How many rounds and byes you need
Rounds grow slowly: every extra round doubles the field it can handle. Byes fill the gap up to the next power of two.

Common questions
How does a knockout bracket work?
Players are paired off, the winner of each game goes through to the next round and the loser is out. The field halves every round until two players meet in the final. It is fast and dramatic, but half the players are finished after one game, so it suits events where time is short or the knockout is the fun.
How many rounds does a knockout tournament need?
Round the player count up to the next power of two and count the halvings: 8 players need 3 rounds, 16 need 4, 32 need 5. A field that is not a power of two uses the same number as the next size up, so 12 players need 4 rounds.
What happens if the number of players is not a power of two?
Some players get a bye, a free pass into round 2, so that round 2 starts with a power of two. With 12 players the bracket is built for 16, so 4 players get a bye and 8 players play in round 1. This generator works the byes out for you.
Who gets the byes in a knockout bracket?
In a seeded bracket the byes go to the top seeds, which is the standard reward for being the strongest players. If you pick a random draw, the order is shuffled first, so the byes land on whoever the draw favours.
How many games are in a knockout tournament?
One fewer than the number of players, because every game knocks exactly one player out and everyone but the winner has to be knocked out. So 8 players play 7 games and 12 players play 11.
What if a knockout game is drawn?
A bracket needs a winner from every game, so decide drawn games before the next round: a rematch with colours reversed, a quick blitz game, or an Armageddon game where Black has less time but wins on a draw. Then click the player who went through.
