What is this?

A free, printable chess tournament kit for teachers and school club leaders. It turns one lesson into a proper tournament: pupils sign up, play three or four rounds on real boards, and everyone leaves with a certificate. The guide explains pairing and scoring in plain language, so you do not need to be a chess player to run it.

Want the full background first? Our teacher's guide to running a school chess tournament goes deeper, and how to start a school chess club covers the weeks in between.

How to use it

  1. Download the PDF and print the guide, the sign-up sheet, one pairing sheet per round, the score table and enough certificates.
  2. Set out one board for every two pupils and read the tournament manners out loud.
  3. Pair round 1 at random, then pair pupils on the same score in later rounds, never twice against the same opponent.
  4. Write every result straight onto the pairing sheet, then add up the points on the score table.
  5. Hand out the certificates. Every pupil gets one, not just the winners.

Common questions

What is in the school chess tournament kit?

Six printable A4 pages: a one-lesson teacher's guide, a player sign-up sheet, a pairings and results sheet to print once per round, a score table for up to 16 players and 5 rounds, a tournament manners poster for pupils, and a certificate to hand out at the end.

How do I run a chess tournament in one lesson?

Plan for 3 or 4 rounds in a 45 to 60 minute session. Set up one board for every two players, pair pupils at random for round 1, then pair players on the same score in later rounds. Give 1 point for a win, half a point for a draw and 0 for a loss, and add up the points at the end.

Do I need to know chess to run a school tournament?

No. The teacher's guide explains pairing, scoring, byes and unfinished games in plain language. Pupils play the games; your job is to read out pairings, write down results and keep time.

What if I have an odd number of pupils?

One pupil sits out each round and gets 1 point, which is called a bye. Give the bye to a different pupil each round so nobody sits out twice.

Is the chess tournament kit really free?

Yes. It is a free PDF with no signup and no watermark. Print as many copies as you need for your class, club or school, and share it with other teachers.

Can ChessHost do the pairings for me?

Yes. ChessHost is a tournament manager for real, over-the-board chess. The teacher runs it from a phone or laptop: pairings in one tap, results as games finish, standings on the classroom screen and a certificate for every pupil. Pupils still play on normal boards. It is free for one event a month with up to 12 players.
