What is this?

A random pair generator mixes a list of names and splits it into pairs, so nobody can say the matchups were rigged. Teachers use it for partner work, families for game night, and clubs for a quick first round when nobody wants to argue about who plays whom. Switch to Teams and it deals everyone into as many random teams as you need, with sizes that never differ by more than one.

It works for any one-on-one game: chess, checkers, table tennis, video games, card games or a debate. If you are running a proper event with several rounds, our guide to free tournament software for any 1v1 game explains the formats that stop repeat matchups.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type the names, one per line. Duplicates and blank lines are ignored.
  2. Choose Pairs for one-on-one matchups or Teams to split into groups.
  3. For pairs with an odd number, pick whether one person gets a bye or the last three make a group of three.
  4. Press Shuffle. Not happy? Press it again for a fresh draw.
  5. Use Copy to paste the result into a chat or email, or Print to pin it up.

Random pairs vs a real tournament draw

Random pairing is perfect for a single round or a one-off activity. Over several rounds it starts to feel unfair: the same two people can meet twice, and the strongest players can knock each other out early. That is why chess and most competitive games use one of three formats instead:

Common questions

How do I pair names randomly?

Paste or type the names one per line, choose Pairs and press Shuffle. The tool mixes the list in a fair random order and pairs the first name with the second, the third with the fourth, and so on. Press Shuffle again for a completely new set of pairs.

What happens with an odd number of people?

You choose. One random person can sit out with a bye, which is the usual choice for games and tournaments, or the last three can make one group of three, which suits classroom partner work. The bye goes to a different random person every time you shuffle.

Can it make random teams instead of pairs?

Yes. Choose Teams and set how many teams you want, from 2 to 20. Everyone is shuffled and dealt out one at a time, so team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Is the random pairing really fair?

Yes. It uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by your browser's built-in cryptographic random numbers, so every possible order of the list is equally likely. Nothing is weighted and the order you typed the names in makes no difference.

How do I stop the same people playing each other twice?

A random pair generator cannot remember earlier rounds, so repeat matchups will happen. For several rounds use a Swiss tournament, which pairs people with similar scores and never repeats an opponent, or a round robin, where everyone meets everyone exactly once. ChessHost does both for any one-on-one game, free for one event a month.
